Problems with “New Light”

🔦 What Is “New Light”?

Jehovah’s Witnesses base the idea of “new light” on Proverbs 4:18“But the path of the righteous ones is like the bright light that is getting lighter and lighter until the day is firmly established.” They interpret this to mean that Jehovah gradually reveals truth over time.

But in practice, “new light” often means a reversal or redefinition of previous doctrine, even though Witnesses are taught that truth never contradicts truth.

🕰️ How Did “New Light” Begin With C.T. Russell?

  • Charles Taze Russell believed he was restoring original Christianity through careful Bible study and chronology.
  • He rejected the idea of divine inspiration or new revelation. He said: “No, the truths I present, as God’s mouthpiece, were not revealed in visions or dreams, nor by God’s audible voice, nor all at once, but gradually…”
    (Zion’s Watch Tower, July 15, 1906)
  • Russell’s doctrines were considered “the truth”, and his writings (especially the Studies in the Scriptures) were treated as spiritual food from God.

⚖️ How Rutherford Shifted the Meaning of “New Light”

  • After Russell’s death in 1916, Judge Rutherford took control. He overhauled many of Russell’s teachings, including the nature of the Great Pyramid, the 1874 invisible return of Christ, and the importance of the Studies in the Scriptures.
  • Rutherford began to institutionalize the idea that “new light” could supersede old light—even if it contradicted it.
  • In 1930, the “superior authorities” of Romans 13 were redefined to mean Jehovah and Jesus—not human governments. (This was later reversed in 1962.)

🧑‍⚖️ How the Modern Governing Body Handles “New Light”

Any doubt or hesitation is labeled as “independent thinking” or “spiritual weakness.”

Today, the Governing Body claims to be “the faithful and discreet slave” of Matthew 24:45, responsible for feeding Jehovah’s people.

They say Jehovah does not speak directly to them, but that they receive spiritual guidance through Holy Spirit and prayerful study.

However, major doctrinal changes are still called “adjustments” or “refinements”—and are expected to be accepted without question.

❓Does God Really Work Like This?

If Jehovah is truly the source of these teachings, would they change back and forth—sometimes decades apart—then be taught as “life-saving truth”? The organization teaches that Jehovah’s truth gets brighter, but when doctrines contradict, it raises a serious question:

Does light from Jehovah ever get dimmer? Or was it never light to begin with?
